Wood trim and siding
- Surface Preparation:
NOTE‚ If lead is suspected in the paint, do not attempt to scrape, sand, power wash, use heat gun, etc., which might put lead into the environment, but rather contact a contractor qualified for lead assessment and abatement- treat mildew areas with a household bleach concentrate:
- dull existing sheen by sanding with an 80 grit sanding sponge or paper
- remove surface contamination; dirt, chalk, etc. by pressure washing and for added measures scrubbing with contractor recommended products then rinse thoroughly.
- NOTE: Prestige Painting is careful about the damage by the high pressure jet of power washing
- Priming:
- Application of the recommended primer over the existing surface or paint (some latex paints may specify use of a primer if used over oil based paint)
- use quality exterior latex or wood undercoater primer that is recommended for wood repaint surfaces
- Primer is meant to be top coated because it is not UV protected
- Painting:
- use premium quality exterior 100% acrylic latex paint in flat, satin, semigloss or gloss finish, depending on appearance desired
- do not apply oil-based paint over latex paint
Stucco

- Surface Preparation:
NOTE‚ If lead is suspected in the paint, do not attempt to scrape, sand, power wash, use heat gun, etc., which might put lead into the environment, but rather contact a contractor qualified for lead assessment and abatement- treat mildew areas with a household bleach concentrate:
- Apply stucco patch to cracks or holes
- if efflorescence is present, remove by hand wire brushing; and try to identify and eliminate any source of water from behind the stucco that could have caused the efflorescence
- remove surface contamination dirt, or chalk, by pressure washing.
- Priming:
- Application of the recommended primer over the existing surface or paint
- use premium quality exterior acrylic primer that is recommended for masonry surfaces
- Painting:
- use premium quality exterior 100% acrylic latex paint in flat, satin, or semi-gloss finish, depending on appearance desired; or a quality latex masonry paint
Metal
Previously Painted
- Surface Preparation:
- Remove any rust, remove by wire brushing, scraping, sanding, or machine grinding; wear eye protection, dust mask and work gloves
- remove surface contamination such as dirt, chalk, rust-scale, etc.
- Priming:
- Prime rust or other corrosion and bare metal
- if there is rust, apply a rust inhibitive metal primer after preparing the surface, covering the entire area
- Painting:
- use premium quality exterior metal paint in flat, satin, semi-gloss or gloss finish (depending on appearance desired) that is recommended for primed or painted metal of the type you are doing
- direct-to-metal (DTM) products may be used for different metals, following manufacturer’s specifications
